Vladimir Skulachev
“Skulachev ions” Project Leader
V.P. Skulachev is a Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, New York Academy, European Academy, President of Russian Members of European Academy Club, Chairman of Russian Committee of Bioenergetics. He is a Lenin Komsomol Award laureate (1967), Bach Award in Biochemistry winner (1972), and USSR State Prize laureate (1975).
The whole Vladimir Skulachev’s scientific activity is associated with Moscow State University. Since 1973 he has been Head of MSU Interdepartmental Laboratory of Bioorganic Chemistry and Molecular Biology, which was in 1991 transformed into the A. N. Belozersky Institute of Physical and Chemical Biology.
Has the highest citation index among all biologists working in Russia (approx. 12000), author of 448 scientific articles.
Born February 21, 1935 in Moscow.
Alexey Ryazanov
“Screening” Project Leader
Doctor of Biological Science, Professor in the University of Medicine and Dentistry (New Jersey, USA), Professor in the Moscow State University.
Author of more than 50 scientific articles published in leading science periodicals in Russia and abroad. He is an author and co-author of five international patents.
At present time he is taking an active part in the work of National Health Institute (USA), is co-operating with the National Institute on Aging (USA) in the field of “the role of protein circulation in the human mechanism of aging”, working with the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (USA) in the field of “structure and functions of EF-2 kinase”. He is also co-operating with the National Cancer Institute (USA) in the field of “the role of EF-2 kinase in human resistance to medications” and with the American Heart Association.
Evgeny Rogaev
“Genomics Centre” Project Leader
Doctor of Biological Science specializing in “medical genetics”, one of the world’s leading scientists in molecular biology, biotechnology and molecular-genetic expertise, the author of 115 scientific articles published in leading science periodicals in Russia and abroad, including Nature, Science, Nature Genetics, Lancet, PNAS, PLOS Biology.
Author of a number of world-acknowledged discoveries in the fields of genomics and medical genetics, one of which being the discovery of genes of the early stages of Alzheimer’s, cataract, etc. He is the pioneer of the two out of three currently known genes of the Alzheimer’s disease.
His key discoveries are:
- discovering the genes encoding the new type of proteolytic ferments - presenilin proteins that play the key part in the development of Alzheimer’s;
- discovering new cellular ferments responsible for regenerative processes.
He was awarded the 1996 Russian Federation State Prize “For the development of theoretical and applied problems of genomic dactylography” and the 1997 Baev Prize. He received a grant in 1995 by the Howard Hughes Medical Institut, a Temple Foundation Discovery Award in 2003 by the Alzheimer’s Association, the National Alliance in Research for Schizophrenia and Depression Distinguished Investigator Award.
He is one of the most widely quoted Russian scientists in biomedicine (quotation summary index of more than 5300). He is currently head of the Molecular Brain Genetics laboratory of the Research Center of Mental Health (Russian Academy of Medical Sciences). He is also head of the Genomics department of the Institute of General Genetics (Russian Academy of Sciences), Head of Laboratory in UMASS, Professor of Psychiatry UMAT, Professor in the Genetics Institute (Russian Academy of Medical Sciences).
One of his best known achievements is deciphering of the Royal family genome and taking part in the expertise of the Royal family remains.
